Things You May Have Missed
Jan 7th
Thanks to the suggestion of Kim and a drought of other television to download I’ve been watching The Wire and what a pleasant surprise. The first thing that occured to me was “How the hell did I miss this?” because the quality is so high. I’ve finished watching Season 3 and am really curious where they’re going to take it in the future because it feels like the story has run its course, but so far I’ve loved every moment of it.
I was also handed a copy of Wicked, a book detailing The Wizard of Oz story from the Wicked Witch of the West’s perspective, which basically calls heresay on the entirety of Dorothy’s story. I loved it so much that I bought the second book, Son of a Witch, and have already devoured that one only to discover that there is yet another book in the series: A Lion Amongst Men.
I love discovering things like these once they’re complete and ready to be consumed without any need to wait for episodes/books. I find it makes the entire experience much more enjoyable because it’s all fresh in my mind without the decaying force of time to do its work.
TV Updates
Oct 19th
I haven’t posted about my television viewing lately, so here’s an update:
Fringe
Remains awesome and loving every moment. Everything seems to be heading to Peter finding out he is actually from an alternate universe and that Walter kidnapped him. I really like that they don’t mess about in this show. Other shows feel like they are dragging the story out because there isn’t much of it to go around, but Fringe feels like they are desparetely trying to fit as much in as possible.
Heroes
Someone wake me up when this becomes interesting. I’m only still watching in the vain hope that things will turn around and the show will be good once more. The story is proceeding at an absolute snails pace so far. At least we’re past the requisite lesbian kiss.
Flash Forward
The premise is interesting, but I can’t shake the feeling that it will end up being lame. This show is also an extremely slow mover. I’m sort of irritated that they’re dwelling so much on the individual character stories rather than exploring the shows mythos more.
Stargate Universe
I’m trying to like this, but the snails-pace story progress and the characters aren’t making it easy. The whole stargate premise is already a stretch, but some chubby ‘MIT drop-out’ being recruited to save them all is pushing it. It also doesn’t help that the show has many parallels to Stargate Atlantis which started promising but devolved into complete rubbish.
External Factors Destroying Experience
Sep 6th
For the past two weeks Oui and I have been experiencing higher than usual latency in WoW making the game practically unplayable and in a moment of weakness we tried out Smoothping. While it did seem to stabilise our latency it didn’t provide anywhere near the benefit advertised and most importantly it didn’t give us latency similar to what we had before our problems started. It did provide some benefit when soloing or during 5-mans, but everything else was impossible.
Talking to our ISP is bad enough, but communicating with Blizzard via email is an exercise in frustration because they suffer from what I like to call email lag. Email lag is the inability to send more than one email a day, so when you send them anything you want to give them as much information as possible to cut down on wasted time. Of course they don’t work weekends either.
Friday night I’d logged off after send my alt some money to watch the first three episodes of Torchwood: Children of Earth (which was awesome), followed by the final two the next morning, so when I logged on in the afternoon I was surprised to find I wasn’t where I’d logged off. I thought perhaps Oui had logged me on after I went to bed, but he hadn’t, so I logged on again to find that I was again not in the same place I’d been the previous logon. My heart was racing and I quickly opened the account management page (which seemed to take forever) and changed my password because it was obvious that my account had been accessed by someone other than me.
I’ll save you the long story of what followed and just say that everything is in the process of being restored but I am now extremely paranoid about how they got in. That is, how did they find out my password and what else do they know. I’ve thought about it and come to the conclusion that it was either a Flash trojan, or Smoothping as I run nothing else. Obviously I don’t want smoothping anymore (especially as its benefits seem to have disappeared). My system has been reformatted back to Vista and two authenticators are making their way to us, much to Oui’s chagrin.
These two things have made us question if we really want to play WoW anymore. Latency frustrations are not fun and while it’s no fault of WoW (I think) Oui is completely uninterested in playing while the problems persist. Having my account compromised has made me extremely paranoid and it’s a shame that this feeling all stems from a game that is supposed to be fun. Worse is the knowledge that in the past when I’ve heard of other peope in situations such as the one I’m in right now I’ve always considered them to be a right idiot, so that must make me an idiot too.
Oui was talking with me tonight that he would post on the forums to tell everyone he’s taking a break because of the latency, so how ironic was it that I logged on and everything was back to normal. No latency problems whatsoever (well, the latency was back to ‘normal’). He’s sceptical that it will still be bad tomorrow so I’ll check in the morning, but we’re riding the thin edge of quitting here.
Things and TV
Aug 17th
You may have noticed that I’ve changed the theme on the site, what do you guys think? Somehow in the process of switching I’ve lost my profile pic… can’t recall if I actually had one with any certainty but I think I did and even if I wanted to put one up again I can’t remember where in the options to set it.
I’m painfully surviving through the dearth of good television to download at the moment with Lost, Heroes and Fringe all on hiatus, and Battlestar Galactica over :( I downloaded the pilot for Caprica and it looked ok… maybe there’s some promise there. I really like Eric Stolz because he was in a movie about vikings that I liked fromwhen I was a kid. Maybe it wasn’t even him though because I can’t remember that far back too clearly. I’m currently watching the second season of True Blood, mainly because I can’t find anything else worth watching. True Blood in season 2 is far superior to season 1, yet the over-abundance of sex remains.
Anyway, I’ve heard Torchwood is good, should I grab it? Any other suggestions?
PS Maybe I have altzheimers since there are lots of things I can’t remember on this post.
Is This Love?
Jul 14th
I’ve been watching True Blood, which consists of lost of sex, blood and various vampires and stuff, and while the first season was mostly ‘meh’ in the last episode a new character was introduced played by none other than Michelle Forbes!
I have a total geek-boner for Michelle Forbes because everything I’ve seen her in she’s been simply amazing. The following selection of her work should help to illustrate the epic proportions of my adoration for her:
| Year | Title | Character |
|---|---|---|
| 1991-1994 | Star Trek: The Next Generation | Ensign Ro Laren |
| 1994 | Seinfeld | Julie |
| 2002-2003 | 24 | Lynne Kresge |
| 2004 | Half-Life 2 | Dr. Judith Mossman |
| 2005 | Alias | Dr. Maggie Sinclair |
| 2005-2006 | Battlestar Galactica | Admiral Helena Cain |
| 2005-2006 | Prison Break | Samantha Brinker |
| 2006 | Half-Life 2: Episode One | Dr. Judith Mossman |
| 2007 | Half-Life 2: Episode Two | Dr. Judith Mossman |
| 2007 | Battlestar Galactica: Razor | Admiral Helena Cain |
| 2008 | Lost | Karen Decker |
| 2009 | The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena | Captain Gail Revas |
| 2008-2009 | True Blood | Maryann Forrester |
Fringe is F’in Awesome
May 8th
The last few episodes of Fringe have felt like they were building to something and this weeks episode was no different, yet more so. I am now fully invested in Fringe, which is good because I needed something to replace Heroes (I liked that Sylar didn’t waste anytime killing Nathan and enjoyed his death throes though).
I have a question about Agent Dunham’s universe shifting thingy though. Is she shifting and replacing the Agent Dunham in that universe or is she shifting and creating a new version of Agent Dunham in that universe? If she is replacing, what happens with the Agent Dunham from that universe? Does she shift to our universe? What if the Agent Dunham from the other universe is the one making the shifts happen and not the one in our universe?
So many questions! I really like that there is so much happening in Fringe, but one tiny niggle I have with this weeks episode was that when Walter was explaining that the head of Massive Dynamics couldn’t possibly be behind ZFT why didn’t anyone mention the only and obvious alternative, ie that it is Walter. I mean, are they stupid or not Vulcan?
Seriously though, with an ending like we had this week, who in their right mind would not want to tune in next week?
Lost Theory Time
May 8th
So I didn’t post about last weeks episode because I thought it was a little anti-climactic, and this weeks episode didn’t tell us much that we didn’t already know (and I’ve had more than enough of love triangles thanks), but while I was having a shower getting ready to watch Star Trek last night a Lost theory popped into my head.
What if Locke is not the leader of the others?
What if Richard Alpert told Locke he was their leader only because Locke himself told Richard the very same thing in the past, but in Locke’s future? It’s a self fulfilling prophecy! The thing is, even if he isn’t their leader nothing is going to dissuade Richard Alpert of the fact because we know in the future when Locke first meets him and he tells Locke he’s their leader Richard is 100% convinced it’s a fact (even though he’s probably not entirely convinced right now).
Whaddaya think?
I am Noble, and Stuff
Apr 26th
I really enjoyed the Noblegarden event this year. I refer to it in the past tense as I am now titled-up and done. Now for Children’s Week.
I should really stay away from spoiler sites but this weeks season 3 finale for Heroes is supposed to… well, I won’t say.
As I’ve already mentioned, Heroes has been lacking this season for me. It has felt like the show has been meandering from plot point to plot point to some kind of conclusion, though I’m not certain I will care by the time it arrives. Where previous seasons have dealt with character crises in multi-episode arcs, this season has dispensed with that and taken the easier (ie shittier) route of:
Last week he was loving shape shifting, this week he has an identity crisis
Now his ex-wife is back, lucky we killed off the fling
and such stuff.
Even worse is that they’ve got characters revisiting emotional plot points that have already been used (to death). Hello? Haven’t we been here already? I honestly can’t imagine how the show could possibly be rescued from the pit of mediocrity it has dug itself into.
Lost on the other hand, I simply cannot wait to see this weeks episode with Faraday back I presume a lot of things are about to happen. Actually, I kinda know what it is already (damn spoiler sites tempting me) but the knowing hasn’t reduced my excitement.
I’ve finally figured out what it is about Fringe that I might not like. It reminds me of X-files in that each week you never know if you’ll be seeing something that matters to the overall story or some pointless side-thing. I hope this weeks episode doesn’t go off on some unrelated tangent.
WoW and Stuff
Apr 24th
No new episode of Lost this week but Fringe is looking more and more promising with the story slowly being unveiled. I’m not sure yet if the story is being inveiled a little too slowly for my liking though I’m sure a few more episodes will tell me.
Heroes was… meh. Sylar is seriously fucked up though. At first I thought he was just imagining his mother was talking to him, not that he was actually shape shifting into her! Talk about twisted. He let smooth talking Rebel (I can’t remember his name) get away even though I thought it would have been way more fun if he’d just sliced his head open indiscriminately. The problem I find with Heroes is that each episode is an hour but the progress they make each episode feels like a 30-minute show.
I’ve put my main WoW toon’s details on here now which serves the dual purpose of allowing me to parade my recent achievements. As you can see from the one at the top of the list right now I am only just getting around to doing some fishing. This is all thanks to the fishing dailies now available in Dalaran, but I was doing one today where I have to fish up 10 fish from Wintergrasp (not exactly the safest of places anytime) and the fish were taking their sweet time jumping onto the hook. I spent a good hour on it this morning and only managed four.
More Lost
Apr 20th
I really love the pairing of Miles’ cynicism and Hurley’s optimism that they’ve been doing a lot of, but it makes me fear that they’re going to kill off Miles because I think he’s finally turning into a character I might one day give a damn about. The opposite has happened with Jack and Kate. I am just sooo sick of both of them and the less time they spend on screen the better, so it’s fortunate that they’ve taken a back seat for most of this season.
I have to say that while this episode didn’t really tell us much that we didn’t already know (except that one of the Ajira Air survivors was somehow back on the mainland and working for the island before the crash), I think that the guy who plays Ben’s dad is a great actor.
So the reveal has been made that Faraday left the island and is now back. Next weeks episode is only a rehash of previous ones so it’s going to be yet another week before we find out what has been happening with Faraday for three years.
Things are going to start heating up now too after one of the security guys knows that Sawyer and Kate took Ben to the others. I’m interested to see how they’ll overcome that little obstacle short of killing the guy.
