I knew going into last weekend that it would be a busy one. Saturday morning I we were straight off to watch my nephew play soccer in the grand final. It was a tense game with neither team scoring and even after an extra 5 minutes each way they still couldn’t break each others defences so it went to penalty shoot-outs. Watching this from the sideline I felt for the poor kids on both sides, thinking of the pressure they’d be under, but mostly I was worried that my nephew might be called upon to take a shot. Thankfully it didn’t come to that.

I was filming the game for my brother and his wife but it was so hard to concentrate on filming that half of the video is probably going to feature the sky or my feet because I’d constantly forgot to point the camera at where the ball was. When our goal keeper blocked the kick that won them the game the family/spectators on our side exploded into elated cheers. It’s weird, I don’t recall hearing the family and friends of the opposition at all during the game.

After that it was off to have a barbie at my brothers place for lunch, which made me feel drowsy so I went home and had a nap. Upon waking I discovered that I had gotten sunburnt watching the soccer – and no one else had :(

Oui continued Friday’s raid and managed to get up to the Lich King, insisting on asking me lore questions, but didn’t manage to kill him.

I got myself a job finally and it’s turned out quite nice. The company is sort of small and deals with software consulting, my role being support. The trip to work is about as long as I had feared but hasn’t turned out to be the nightmare I had imagined. Having an hour each way back would be nice though.

How incredbile is it that I’m yet to meet the company dick-head? Everyone seems so friendly while being focused focused on the job and they don’t micromanage at all, which I love. I don’t know what will come of the fact that they’re all a bunch of piss-pots though. The company products are varied and I will post about them another time.

My internet connection has returned to normal (after harrassing AAPT) and I’m resubbed to WoW but I’ve barely had a moment in the past two weeks to even log on because last weekend I went and did a course with Learn to Trade so that I can trade on the foreign exchange. I’m not really trading at the moment, just practising on a demo account for when I feel confident enough to use my real money. I’m doing this to hopefully free myself from the shackles of regular Sydney life, namely so that I can accelerate any plans andbreak the shackles of slavery I am forced to endure.

Oui is pining for WoW too, reducing himself to logging into my account because he misses it so much. He is really miserable because of his job so I told him that if he really hates it so much just quit and find something else. He’d rather find something else and then quit though.

We’re planning to go to Melbourne and hang with guildies and friends for Blizzcon and are booking the tickets tonight courtesy of Oui’s recalcitrance to spending money. I’m really looking forward to it especially as it’s been years since we’ve seen some of them (the others we’ve never actually met). It will actually be Oui’s birthday while we’re down there and since we already bought a Wii that has killed my idea for what to get him. I’ll have to be creative.

I’ve always wanted the ability to track information about my character in WoW and the Armory has mostly served this purpose in a limited fashion. The reason is because despite the significant strides Blizzard go to to expose data it is still housed in its own little silo. The fact that the Armory is there is great, but what if information about your character could come to you instead of you needing to go to it?

If there is one thing that I usually want to know it is events on my calendar and little did I know that it is indeed possible to pull your calendar data out of the armory into calendar software such as Outlook or Google Calendar. This was such a huge revelation to me that I absolutely had to write about it here.

After logging into the armory and loading up the desired character, visit the calendar and you will see the following:

Clicking on it will display the screen where you can select the types of events you want to appear on the calendar feed and it is also possible to add the events of your other characters (a maximum of 5).

After selecting the options you desire and copying the feed address to your clipboard, you can then follow the instructions on the Calendar Feed FAQ for how to add to either Outlook or Google Calendar.

The beauty of it is that because it’s a feed it will be automatically updated, so once added it will always be as up-to-date as the armory calendar (which I assume is very up-to-date since it is possible to accept or decline invitations through it).

Unfortunately this probably won’t work for anyone thinking of setting this up on their office PC if they already can’t access the armory, but I’d be happy to hear if it does.

Is there convenient, time-saving thing you know about that you’d like to share? Let me know!

In my WoW hiatus I’ve been playing Lotro and since I purchased the Mines of Moria expansion but never actually got to see any of it due to my bad habit of deleting toons because I got bored with them I was determined this time.

The good news is that I hit level 50 this week and headed into the gates to Moria only to be presented with a string of quests all not-in-Moria and then given a quest that forced me to level a legendary weapon (something unique to Lotro) before I can consider getting past the Watcher in the Water and finally getting into Moria.

Another thing unique to Lotro is session play which lets you assume the role of an NPC to experience either a part of the story from a different perspective or even life as a chicken (which probably sounds ridiculous but it’s incredibly fun). Anyway, there is a session play quest as part of the quests I’ve done so far that shows the fall of the Mines of Moria. At least it would have if Turbine had the story-telling and technical ability with which to do so. The quest was supposed to be the fall of Moria, but it was actually the unveiling of the (a?) Balrog. It’s also worth mentioning that the Balrog looked bloody horrible, but I’m a bit spoiled after seeing one portayed in the films. Would it have hurt to use a few more polygons though? Anything with wings needs a lot of care!

As far as introductions go, Mines of Moria so far sucks. Developer Tip: Get people into the content as quickly as possible!

Contrast that with the latest WoW patch and it’s night and day. Lotro’s strength has historically been in story telling, but WoW is a serious challenger and with the phasing being improved in the future it will be even better. My guild was doing Ice-Crown Citadel on the weekend and managed to get the first three bosses down. The third boss, which is a battle between the alliance and horde gunships, is just about the most fun I think I’ve ever had in WoW. Now if only they’d let us keep the jump packs…

I’ve recently implemented a small change I’m rather proud of to our company website that will automatically display any recipes we have on file that make use of a product you’re viewing. At the moment I’ve only got Texturas recipes so that’s the only thing that will show them, but in time more recipes will mean it slowly spreads to all products.

While I’m on the topic of Texturas, they are an amazing product that I never knew about which allows you to some quite creative things with food that as a food consumer I always took for granted. No more though!

Anyway, the display of recipes is all done using the magic and power of the Views module for Drupal. Quite amazing really and perhaps I will come back to this post when my brother isn’t waiting for me in WoW to detail exactly how I did it.

When guilds advertise for new members one of the things they invariably mention they have, other than a tabard, is forums. Such forums are usually run on phpbb, free php-based message board software, and while the formation of a hub through which a community might be built seems like a good idea there are realities which clash with such attempts.

First and foremost, message boards are inherently weak when it comes to presenting content. They are structured in such a way that you must navigate to sub-forums to access any content and even then only the subject/title of the content is provided without any preview or short blurb from the content to assist the user in assessing it’s value (everyone knows that forum subjects are notoriously useless when it comes to assessing the value of any post). So the content is buried inside the forums with no indication of its value available without direct evaluation.

Secondly, most people are content consumers (readers), not content creators (writers). Ever hear/see guildies being encouraged to visit the forums? Many guilds struggle to get members to create an account on their forums, let alone visit or even write anything on them.

If you examine any forums you will see a pattern where a select group of people create threads and a seperate group of people respond/comment to them, this being true of any message boards, so using this knowledge the ideal situation would be to allow only people who create content to do so, and everyone else access to comment on existing content.

Obviously working backwards from a system where everyone already has access to create content isn’t ideal and I wouldn’t recommend it unless you enjoy creating drama, because people don’t tend to take losing something well (even if it was something they never used or intended to use). What I’m actually suggesting is that these things be considered in the beginning when setting everything up; that users be given appropriate permissions from the outset.

While message boards may seem the best option for such a system, WordPress, Drupal, or another CMS would be better, especially in their ability to present content at the top level in a manner in which content value can be more readily assessed.

There are sites that do a lot of work to give guilds the tools they need to operate as they’d like, but these third-party sites can only do so much with what has been made available. Blizzard are unprecedented in the amount of information they have exposed to third parties for WoW, but even then they can only go so far before hitting a brick wall. Third-party sites such as Guild Launch are left to cobble together functionality leaving their users with quite a bit of manual work.

I’ve always thought it would be great if Blizzard extended their support of guilds to a web interface that included CMS features like I’ve described. One that could integrate with the game, the armory, the calendar, everything. They say they will be doing ‘something’ for guild in the upcoming expansion and I dream that such a thing will occur but I’m not holding my breath.

My brother and his kids are still chugging along on WoW and I put in the occasional few hours with them, but I still find playing with them incredibly dull.

Just last Monday Oui and I were helping my brother with some group quests in Icecrown and the results were not exactly what we had hoped for. Firstly, roll call:

Ferag – 80 Fury Warrior (my brother)

Tardin – 80 Shadow Priest (Me)

Udmarge – 80 Discipline Priest (Oui)

Despite having Oui on his Horde toon, because none of his alliance toons were high enough, I wasn’t expecting any trouble, but my brother surprised us once more by dying about 3 seconds into each fight (I had been trying to heal him) after which Oui would pick them up and tank while I dps’ed.

So to summarise:

Warrior dies near-instantly

Discipline priest tanks

Shadow Priest DPS’s

I was the only person filling their traditional role!

I had hoped that after all this time my brother would improve and in some respects he has. His knowledge of all things WoW has certainly increased, but his coordination and response times are still in the shitter. Adding the fact he’s a keyboard turner should illustrate a total disaster. Keyboard turners aren’t all bad, I know one in particular who is quite good actually (hi Kim!), but combined with his slow response times and lack of situational awareness it’s a recipe for wiping many, many times.

I can’t bear to play with him for extended periods for fear I will kill myself even though I have to admit that I was probably exactly like him at one stage (except the keyboard turning, I haven’t keyboard turned since Doom). It all takes me back to when Oui first started playing.

We didn’t start off with two accounts. At first it had been Kevin who gave me his 10-day trial to give the game a show and I was hooked. My first character (a mage) was hell because I had a run-in-and-gun style of play that didn’t match the class and of course I had no bloody idea about playing a mage. That character died a quick death of deletion. To illustrate how much of a noob I was enjoy the following conversation:

Me: I can’t believe how big the world is!
Kevin: Yeah, it’s pretty big.
Me: How the hell am I gonna remember where everything is?
Kevin: I dunno…
Ben: I wish they had a map or something, it’d make things so much easier.
Kevin: What? Didn’t you read the manual?
Me: Umm, not yet…
Kevin: … press M

So yeah, I was a noob too. Unfortunately convincing Oui that the money I was spending on the game was a good idea wasn’t working so I knew the only way to avert disaster, ie avoid being told I can’t play anymore, was to convince him to play. That act itself took a few days but he eventually gave in and created a female human warlock names Sawasdee. Luckily he’d already play Lineage 2, which he’d been hooked on until dying one day and losing an epic weapon (you have a chance of losing gear/money when you die in Lineage 2), so I at least had a basis of knowledge upon which to build.

Of course WoW hooked him and soon it became me telling him to get off the computer so I could play (by this time I had my hunter Freand who would later die in the great deletion of BC). We had many arguments back in those days over who’s turn it was to play, eventually leading to the decision that we had to not only get another account but also another computer.

To be continued…
