It draws near

It draws near

Seeing that part 2 of the pending patch was downloading gets me very, very excited. I really hope it drops this week, though I hear it's actually next because arena points will be reset then.

Drupal 6 + E-commerce = NULL

The two popular e-commerce modules for Drupal are E-commerce and Ubercart, so when the MD at work mentioned he would like some E-commerce functionality on our company website I went looking for what is available. I've had some experience with the E-commerce module about 3 years ago when I was making an art website so that was the first place I looked.

Drupal is notorious for its contributed modules (ie anything not included as part of core Drupal) lagging behind core development, with stable releases of major modules such as CCK, Views, and Panels pending more than 6 months after Drupal 6 was released, but I was still surprised to discover that there is no Drupal 6 version of E-commerce - not even a development version.

Next stop was Ubercart but the best they have there is a very early alpha release, and it is extremely early and completely broken in a number of important places. Unfortunately it is also dependant upon a number of other modules that are incompatible with a module I am already using.

Drupal has such a short period between releases, with only the current and previous versions being supported, that contrib modules can barely keep up with the major changes between them. The Drupal core team are actively pushing people to test Drupal 7 already, meaning attention has already shifted away from Drupal 6.

It's enough work maintaining the existing version of a module between Drupal versions. CCK and Views received major overhauls, which contributed to the delayed release, but such a thing was only possible because both modules are incredibly popular and have most of the Drupal developer-base working on them. Smaller, less popular, modules can only dream of such attention.

So I'm left hoping that E-commerce gets a Drupal 6 version sometime soon, because there is no way in hell I am regressing to Drupal 5 with the promise of Drupal 7 appearing to remove all support.

Turning simple acts into difficult

I received a phone call a few days back from CAT Telecom, who are responsible for international telephone billing in Thailand, informing me that a bill for about 600 baht ($20AUS) was overdue.

In Thailand telephone bills are already confusing enough. My home telephone is with True but the bill that arrives is from ToT, the national carrier. My internet bill is from True and my international calls are from CAT Telecom.

Paying bills is usually as easy as wandering over to one of the millions of 7-Elevens in Thailand - unless your bill is overdue. If your bill is overdue you must go to an office of the relevant company to pay.

Only in Thailand do they make it harder to pay your bill if it's overdue.

After lunch at Yerring Station

After lunch at Yerring Station

I don't know what it is about cameras and me, either I have my eyes shut or am focusing on something else causing myself to look spaced-out. Lunch was very nice, especially with Kim and Darren as company. This was also our first Australian meal since arriving.

During our visit to Melbourne Kim was Oui's scarf buddy, making it so that he didn't feel quite so self-concious about wearing one.

Update: Oops, I just realised he wasn't wearing it in this photo

I saw this view and instantly wanted to get a photo of it. Luckily the winery part of Yerring Station was two floors so I had some elevation when taking it.

The morning of our second day in Melbourne Oui decided to take some amazing photos of the garden. This is one example of how something you see every day is so beautiful if you look at it from another perspective.

Cupcake heaven

Cupcake heaven

I don't know if our visit was premeditated, but am I ever glad we went to this place! The vanilla flavoured mini-cupcake I had was absolutely divine but then again, anything vanilla falls into that category.

The two rings

The two rings

One ring to rule them all, one ring to find them, one ring to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them.

And then there's my ring that exists to boss his about.

Guild gathering

I was a bit nervous to see people whom I have been talking to for 2 years, not all of them though but I have never actually met them. Are they going to bite me? Or am I going to bite them?

It was freaking cold for the first night in my life in Melbourne, I could actually see my breath Wahoo Hello Australia, no more sticky and ridiculously hot weather!. It was cool to see Melbourne at night, where everything is so tidy, where people can just cross the street whenever they like and of course the city itself is beautiful.

The restaurant we went to was a pizza place which I believe that was pretty cheap and the food was nice, I even had 2 dishes! What a surprise! On the way to the restaurant there were people outside restaurants trying to get us to go inside. “Hello do you want this?…that?…good!…nice!…blah...”. They even grabbed my hand and that gave me a bit of a surprise. Is this a Melbourne thing? It reminds me of Patpong, Pattaya and Soi Cowboy.

There were Adam, Andrew, Nelly and Michael sitting there already. I gave Nelly a big hug because she was the one I have been talking to for a long time. “Finally we meet” I said. Wow she’s so cute.

Later on ZilentZhadow, a guild member from Gelong, arrived and Darren told me that he’s a bit quiet. Sounds like me, I love hugging a wall cause I enjoy having nothing to say. He sat next to me and that was where the conversation started. I spent most of the time talking to him and Nelly about WOW, the beta server etc.

Michael’s wife and Gilly came last, I didn’t have a chance to talk to them all but it was fun seeing all of us enjoying chatting. After a while we all went our separate ways. It was only 2 hrs but full of joy. Can you believe it? More than 2 bloody years and we finally mange to meet them even though they’re quite far from us.
