Facebook Says Games are Fun, and Stuff

I’m really loving my PS3 lately and more love is forthcoming after my recent order of God of War Collection.

There was a recent firmware update to the PS3 which added Facebook connectivity  and something else that I didn’t care about. I don’t actually care about Facebook, I’m only on it because so many people I know are on it and I fully expect it to be dumped for the next social networking fad shortly (Twitter failed to sway ‘the masses’). Anyway, I’ve enabled every Facebook option on my PS3 and was disappointed to see that it aggregates my posts rather than doing them individually. I had been hoping to irritate the hell out of everyone to give them the gentle push away from Facebook.

Also, I saw 2012 and it lived up to the over-the-top-ness that I had hoped for. It’s basically every single disaster film you’ve ever seen rolled into one.

Earthquake Yes
Floods Yes
Tsunami Yes
Volcano Eruption Yes
Government Cover-up Yes

Ok, so technically the last one isn’t a disaster.

The film features every cliche you can imagine and doesn’t disappoint in terms of the sheer scale of destruction. The level of proficiency with which the effects are handled are jaw-droppingly realistic and if you’re anything like me, will make you feel extremely uncomfortable concerning the wholesale death of billions of people.

Creepies, Crawlies, and Hoppies

After the gym last night Oui and I were greeted by a huge toad sitting at our front door and despite Oui’s screams that I should kill it, even though I would be too terrified to get close were I inclined to kill it, I managed to scare it away and quickly get inside in the fear that it might want to follow us in. If it had gotten inside we’d have really been in trouble!

It reminded me of the time there was a huge spider on the back of my front door years ago and I’d been too terrified to leave the house even by the back door, because then it could be anywhere! I’d contemplated calling work to tell them I couldn’t come today, but canned that idea because I didn’t know how to explain that it was because their was a massive spider on the back of my front door.

Then there was the time my ex had been chasing me around the house with a spider he’d caught in a jar which he eventually let out just outside our back door to my cries of anger/fear, complaining that it would just come back and kill me now.

For reference, Oui has a deathly fear of rats of which there is an abundance in Bangkok. I enjoy seeing his reaction after telling him I saw a rat in various places near him (or nowhere near him). He thinks rats are disgusting and when he saw pictures of friends of ours with their friends pet rat on their shoulder I think he nearly passed out.

My ex fears frogs because when he was a kid one had somehow gotten into his pants, which in retrospect isn’t really that difficult a feat.

Apple: Friend of User

Despite Apple’s much-lauded design innovations, it seems they’re suffering from a bit of confusion.

The (higher) number to the right of each item must indicate the install size, whereas the other (lower) number is the download size. In what situation would the install size be useful, especially as in most instances it is already installed? It wouldn’t be so bad if they made it clear what the higher number means.

Bravo Apple, you’ve done yourself proud.

It’s not only Apple though.

While this screenshot was taken before the Mines of Moria expansion was released, I’m a proud Lord of the Rings Online player and can report that problem and a bunch of it’s friends remain with us to this very day.

Spam

Even though my blog is small and has very little traffic I still get spam and this morning I looked to find a whopping 65 spam comments on my Dragon Age post. I guess the spam machines are always targetting the latest thing but I still feel special.

Dragon Age

Since I’d already bought Uncharted for PS3 this month I knew Oui wouldn’t let me get another game, so I had to download Dragon Age: Origins to give it a try. I have to admit that while the game is good it is quite a ways from being great so far and I have to confess that the return to a Baldur’s Gate 2 control-style is most unwelcome.

It’s been a while since I played a game that runs like crap on my pc and now that I’ve seen how poorly Dragon Age performs I’ve come to the realisation that a game that doesn’t perform well is nowhere near as fun as one that does. I’ve tried turning down the detail but it doesn’t seem to make much difference. The whole experience reminds me of Neverwinter Nights 2, which I’m sure might have been fun had I ever been able to get it to run reasonably well.

Oh, did I mention the blood? There is ridiculous amounts of it in Dragon Age and I’m talking about blood bursting from bodies and the resultant splatter covering your character/s for a while. It’s actually quite disgusting and totally unnecessary in my opinion.

I’m only a little into the game so I haven’t experienced much of it yet so perhaps it will redeem itself shortly, but has anyone else checked it out? What do you think?

Ok, Who’s Already Done It?

Fight!

Fight!

I know a couple guildies I’m certain will have already jumped on this. Addicts, I tell you! Now if only I could get Oui to say yes…

Guild Homes

When guilds advertise for new members one of the things they invariably mention they have, other than a tabard, is forums. Such forums are usually run on phpbb, free php-based message board software, and while the formation of a hub through which a community might be built seems like a good idea there are realities which clash with such attempts.
